SunlightoodsthroughthewindowssurroundingtheentranceofthenewwingattheMaltaTownshipLibraryilluminatingarichinteriorlledwithneatlyarrangedbookshelvesreadingtablesandcafstools.Thespacehastheinformalfeelofacoffeeshop.Alargecirculationcenterisstrategicallysituatedtoallowaccessfromanypartofthelibraryandbrightnewlightxturesaugmentthenaturallightfromthewindows.Itisamoderninvitingsettingthatanyreaderwouldndcongenial.Theolderpartofthelibraryduetoberemodeledincomingmonthsasfundsbecomeavailableprovidesastarkcontrastbetweenoldandnew.Stillafunctioningpartofthelibraryitsearly20thcenturyoriginsareevidentdespitetherowsofcomputersthatdominatewhatwasoncethecentralspaceoftheMaltalibrary.Itishardtobelievethatallofthelibrarysholdingswereoncecrammedintothismodestspace.Yetallthingsarerelative.AsgreatacontrastasisprovidedbythejuxtapositionoftheoldandnewwingsoftheMaltalibrarytheoldlibraryrepresentedagiantleapforwardfromthelibraryshumblebeginnings.LibrarianPeggyWogenwilltellyouthattheMaltaPublicLibrarygotitsstartin1915whentheWomensClubvotedtoestablishareadingroomandpublicrestroominanemptylotnearwheretheoldrestationstood.Theresajokeintheresomewheremaybeacouple.Stillthisone-stoppublicconvenienceledeightyearslatertotheestablishmentofaproperlibrarythankstodonationsfromapairoflocalbenefactors.ThisbuildingFromAReadingRoomtoRoomforReadingMaltaMadeitHappenTheGivingTreecommemoratesthegenerosityofMaltacommunitymemberswhohadahandinthebuildingofthenewlibrarywing.COMMUNITY8 PeggyWogentheheadlibrarianbehindhernewlyconstructedcirculationdesk.COMMUNITY9 wasthenrecognizedbythestatetwoyearslaterasaregularpubliclibrary.Thatoriginalbuildingcontainedonly1100squarefeetbutitservedthetownshipwellfor80years.Itssmallbudgetdidnotallowforafull-timelibrarianandthepatronssometimeshadtohuntdownthelibrarianduringthoseyearstoborrowthekeywhentheyneededtheloanofabook.TownspeoplewouldborrowthekeyndwhattheyneededatthelibraryandthenlockbackupwhentheyweredonesaysPeggy.Thatshardtoimaginebutthatshowthetownwouldusethelibrary.Wedidnthaveregularhours.Neverthelessthelibrarywaspartofthesmalltownsfabricaplacewhereonecouldquietlyexplorethewiderworldofbooksandalandmarkthatquietlyemphasizedasmalltownscivicpride.Itwasntuntil2003thatMaltaresidentDelSandburgactedonanideathathedhadforsometimetoapproachtheownerofthelotadjacenttolibraryandaskifhedbewillingtosellit.IsawthegentlemanwhoownedthepropertylookingatitonedayremembersDel.TherewasahouseonthelotandIthinkhehadinmindxingitupandsellingit.IknewthathousewouldbedifculttosellandIalsoknewthatthelotwastheonlywaythelibrarycouldgetlarger.SoIaskedhimifhedbeinterestedinsellingthelottothelibrary.AfterreceivingaverbalcommitmentfromtheownerthathedbewillingtosellthepropertyDelwenttothelibraryboardandaskedthemiftheydbeinterestedinpurchasingtheproperty.Theysaidofcoursebutthattheydidnthaveanymoney.ThatwasaprettyreasonableresponseDellaughs.UndauntedDelcontinuedtopiecetogetherthepuzzlethathadstartedtakingshapeinhismindandwhichnowhadthesupportofanadhocbuildingcommitteemadeupofotherMaltacitizens.TherstthinghedidwasapproachRichardKatzwhoserootsrundeepintheMaltacommunityforadvice.Richarddidmorethanofferadvice.HemadeasizabledonationtogetusstartedsaysDel.Iwasthenabletoaskforsupportfromafewotherfolksandwithinthreeorfourweekswehadenoughmoneytobuythehouse.AtthatpointtheprojectofaddinganewwingtotheMaltalibrarytookonthecharacterofaslow-motionbarnraisingthatstretchedoverseveralyears.BobKylerthelocalexcavatorvolunteeredtoteardowntheoldhouseonthelotandhaulitawayatnocost.AtthatpointsaysDelwehadanemptylotandpeoplewhohadinvestedtimemoneyandinterestsowedecidedthatitwastimetodomorethanjustbuyalot.Wewerereadytodosomethingwithit.OnceagainDelwentbeforethelibraryboard.TheywerealittlereticentaboutgoingintodebtsaysDelbutIthoughtthecommunitywouldsupporttheideaofanewwing.Inanactoffaiththebuildingcommitteehadplansdrawnupandbeganacceptingin-kinddonationsofbuildingmaterialsandcommitmentstohelpwithtaskslikecarpetlayingandpainting.ThemoneyDelknewwouldcome.Andcomeitdidultimatelytothetuneofover650000.Weborrowedabout325000ofthatamountsaysDelbuttherestofitcamefromvolunteerworkandoutrightdonations.ThepeoplefromtheareaaroundMaltawerethemajorsourceofsupport.Delgesturestowardabeautifullycraftedmemorialintheshapeoftreethatisbuiltintoawallneartheentranceofthelibrary.Eachleafonthetreehasthenameofadonorinscribedonit.ImadethistothankallofthepeoplewhodonatedtotheprojectsaysDel.YoullCOMMUNITY10 11noticetheresnodistinctionmadeastohowmuchmoneypeoplegave.Ididntwanttodrawattentiontothatbecausemyfeelingisthatsomeonewhogave50orlessmayhavedugjustasdeepassomeonewhogave5000.Everyoneworkedhardonthisprojectanditwasntjustthebiggiverswhobuiltthiswing.Peopledonatedtheirskillsandtheirtimetoo.PeggypointsoutthatDelalsobuiltalltheshelvesforthewing.Theyaresimplesturdyoakshelvesbeautifullynishedandreectiveofthefunctionalitythatcharacterizesthelibrarysnewaddition.DespitehispivotalroleinrealizingthecommunitysvisionofaremodeledlibraryDelishumbleabouthiscontributions.TurningtohiswifeCarolwhohasbeensittingquietlybyhissideduringthestoryofhowMaltasnewlibrarycametobeDelemphasizesthatCarolwastheonewhokepthimontaskandsawtotheorganizationaldetails.ItookcareofsomepaperworkandIwrotesomethankyounotesbutIhadalotofhelpwiththatsaysCarol.Everyaspectofthisprojectwastrulyacommunityeffort.Peggysaystheprogrammingandservicesatthelibraryhavereallyblossomedsincetheadditionofthenewwing.ItsfunnysaysPeggyIcametoworkatthelibraryfromapositionasacollegeEnglishinstructorandIguredIwasgoingfromastressfuljobtoonethatjustrequiredmetocheckbooksinandout.ThenatmyrstboardmeetingDelshowsupwiththedeedtothenewpropertyandtheideaforexpansionandIthoughtwhathaveIgottenmyselfintoStartingworkastheMaltalibrarianin2003thesameyeartheideaforthenewwingtookrootPeggyhadachancetoprovideinputontheconstructionofthebuildingwhereshenowworks.AtrsttheboardthoughttheyonlyneededtodoublethesizeofthelibrarybutItoldthemtheyneededtotripleitwhichtheyultimatelydid.Anditsagoodthing.Thelibrarynowhasabout150childreninitssummerreadingprogramaswellasabout75adults.ThelibraryservesasacentralhubforeventslikeMaltaDaysandtheresevenaprogramthatencouragespeopletoreadbooksthathavebeenbannedintimespastbuthavesincebecomeclassics.UsagesincethecompletionofthenewwinghastripledaccordingtoPeggy.Wegotsobusyonedaywehadpeoplesittingintheaislestocheckout.Thelocaltaxallocationforthelibrarywhichhadnotchangedduringtheprevious80yearswasraisedtohelpPeggyandherstaffmakefulluseofthenewfacilityandPeggynotesthattheincreasewaspassedonthersttry.Thecommunityhasjustbeenincrediblysupportive.Ourboardhasbeenwonderful.Thisistrulyacommunityspacebuiltbythecommunity.WorkoncompletingtherestorationoftheoldwingcontinuesasadditionalcontributionsaremadebutthatworkwillbehastenedbythefactthattheinitialloanforthenewwingwaspaidoffatthebeginningoftheyearatrulyamazingfeatwhenyouconsiderthatMaltaTownshipisacommunityofonlyabout1400peopleandthatnotaxdollarswereusedintheconstructionofthenewwing.TheresamortgageburningplannedduringMaltaDaysthisJunebutitwillbelessaboutshakingofftheburdenofdebtthanaboutcelebratingthespiritofthislittletownthatsawaneedandmetit.YouknowsaysDelwelostourhighschoolafewyearsagowheneverythingwasconsolidatedinDeKalb.Thatwasagoodthingforourstudentsbutitleftalittleholeinthecommunity.Ithinkthenewlibraryhelpsllthathole.ItssomethingthatbelongstoMalta.Itsoursandthatmeanssomething.MembersoftheMaltaTownshipLibraryExpansionCommitteelefttorightJamieColbertKevinMcArtorTerrySandbergJerryMcArtorCarolSandbergandDelSandberg.JamieWillrettnotshown.COMMUNITY11
